Bhavaraju Venu Gopal (BVG) - Our Father!
Our father, Mr Bhavaraju Venu Gopal, was a man of intellect, passion, and quiet resilience. An English lecturer by profession, he lived and breathed the language, inspiring generations of students with his deep love for literature.
Beyond the classroom, he was a history enthusiast and a cricket buff, always ready to weave tales of the past with such wit and flair that cousins and relatives would gather around him at family occasions just to listen. Another of his interests was numerology, which he pursued with the same curiosity and seriousness as his other passions. Some remember him for his singing too! His keen interest in economics often colored his reflections on history and literature, while his immense passion for Shakespeare made the Bard’s plays and sonnets a constant presence in our home.
In his mid-forties, he began doctoral studies on Sinclair Lewis, focusing on the Nobel-winning Main Street. For nearly a decade, he immersed himself in research, borrowing books from USIS libraries in India and poring over volumes on the Great Depression - both fiction and nonfiction. His dedication was extraordinary. But tragedy struck when, on the eve of submission, his luggage - carrying his entire thesis - was stolen. In the pre-digital era, with no backups, his decade of work vanished.
Though devastated, and after years of pause, he restarted, encouraged by my mother. He painstakingly rebuilt his thesis, but sadly passed away in 1997 before defending it. For us, sharing his work is both a duty and a privilege.
