When “Main Street” (1920) was published, President Warren Harding had desired to establish a Rotary Club in every city, town and hamlet in order to foster the ideals of freedom and the progress of civilization. He took over the reins of the country that very year. The small town was the cradle of contemporary American Culture, with its inherent complacency and provincialism. The first literary trumpet blasts of deliverance from such narrowness had already been sounded the previous year (1919) with the publication of Sherwood Anderson’s “Winesburg, Ohio”, and H L Mencken’s “Prejudices”. Sinclair Lewis’ harsh indictment of village life, the middle class and the philistine in America had a ready receptive audience. The Early Novels - The Pre-Nobel Prize Period

The novels of Sinclair Lewis serve as the right antidote for the tedium experienced by the businessman. The effect of his novels has more significance than the expression of a dissatisfaction with the conditions of life in America as well as an innate urge for change, and a change for the better. His first novel “Our Mr. Wrenn”, or his Nobel Prize winner “The Main Street” or the most influential “Babbitt”, serve this purpose. Lewis had in him, a very high degree of complacency and rebelliousness that got exposition in the novels preceding “The Main Street”. His maiden novel had the unique privilege of winning a bride for him, Grace Heggar Lewis, way back in 1914. He had dedicated his work to her. “Our Mr. Wrenn” with the sub-title “The Adventurers of a Gentleman” echoed the indelible influence of HG Wells. Biography of Sinclair Lewis

Sinclair Harry Lewis (1885 - 1951) was born in Sauk Center, Minnesota. Son of a country doctor, Edwin J Lewis, he had a very rigorous childhood. It was dominated, firstly by his elder brother, Claude and later by some literary and rebellious influences. He was very proud of the medical tradition of his family. Besides his father, three of his relatives, including his own brother were practicing doctors.  At Yale, though academically bright, he was a non-conformist at the core. He edited a literary magazine and wrote long medieval poems, "(O God!) lady's (sic) clad in white Samite, mystic, won-der-ful." In another poem, he wrote about "The Little Ones and the gas-stove that was  really a beastie." He had even planned a great four-generation novel, "The Children's Children", though he could not ultimately write it. He made a trip to England in a cattle boat and in steerage to Panama.
